Why Your Furnace May Be Making These Noises Published on November 23, 2016 It’s that time of year when homeowners start turning on their heating systems to settle in for a cold winter. Unfortunately, when some furnaces start up, especially if it hasn’t received a yearly heating tune-up, there are some troubles that need to be assessed. A major problem you may run into is your furnace making weird noises – read about these furnace noises you should never neglect. Scraping Sound If you hear a loud scraping noise that sounds like metal on metal, there is possibly something defective with the blower wheel. If you hear a noise like this, power off your furnace right away and call Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning to inspect the equipment. There are a couple things that could be wrong with the blower wheel. First, it might just be loose and if the component is not too impaired, can be tightened. Second, it could be that the blower wheel is broken and in need of replacement. Or third, it may be that the motor mount is what broke, causing the whole blower assembly to vibrate uncontrollably. One of our service technicians would be happy to come out and take a look, and get you back to the noiseless and cozy home you have come to adore. Loud Bang When Furnace Starts If there is a loud pop when your furnace comes on, there are a handful of things that could be happening. Two common things are a dirty furnace burner or ignitor. Expanding and contracting air ducts can also cause loud sounds after the furnace blower comes on. A dirty furnace burner or ignitor could delay the burners from igniting, resulting in gas to build up. When the gas finally does ignite, it will create the loud boom you hear. This could cause a safety issue, especially if one of the small explosions caused the heat exchanger to break. Not only could that result in a carbon monoxide leak, but you will have to replace the heat exchanger, which could be very pricey. The other problem, extending and contracting air ducts, is a common noise complaint for people with metal ducts. If your system is making the loud bang and it is caused by your air ducts, it could be an indication of undersized ducts, closed vents, or a clogged air filter. Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning is happy to set up an appointment to diagnose your trouble and get your home back to order. Additionally, this will also result in improved comfort as well. Whining Noise If you hear a whining noise, it could be the blower motor is malfunctioning, the shaft bearings are in need of oil, or an issue with the blower belt. An annual system tune-up will help discover these issues before they become serious problems so make sure you contact us at 905-453-6700 and we’ll make sure your heating system is ready to keep you safe and warm all winter long.
